Vehicle preparation

Vehicles used by bushwalkers to access bush areas, especially more remote locations, should be in good mechanical condition and adequately equipped with basic safety equipment, including:

  • First aid kit
  • Drinking water, at least 10L, more in summer
  • 12V phone charger
  • Torch
  • Safety vest
  • Groundsheet
  • Shovel
  • Gloves
  • Jumper leads with surge guard
  • Saw or axe

If travelling over the bushfire season, sufficient for all passengers:

  • Extra water
  • Woollen blankets or fire blankets
  • Safety glasses
  • P2 smoke masks
  • Long sleeve cotton or wool clothing
  • Leather boots and gloves

If travelling in winter to areas where snowfall is possible:

  • Snow chains (diamond pattern)
  • Additional long handled shovel
  • Ice scraper for windscreen
  • Ensure alpine diesel for diesel vehicles
